Since 1995, I have been a full time practicing NHS consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in London. My theatre work involves anaesthetics for major colorectal surgery as well as a wide range of other surgical specialties including major vascular surgery, spinal surgery, gynaecology, trauma and orthopaedics.

As a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine for 25 years, I am responsible for a 22-bedded adult general ICU which has over 400 admissions per year and is recognized for ICM training. All of my on call duties are solely for Intensive Care.

As deputy clinical director from 2006-2019 I was involved with several Trust projects including the expansion of critical care services, building of a theatre assessment unit and a surgical HDU. I have been an appraiser for 3 years.

I have some experience in medico-legal report writing and attended the Bond Solon expert witness training course in 2019. I have been lead investigator for an SUI investigation and written Coroner’s reports and attended Coroner’s Court on several occasions.I have co-authored 2 books and have over 30 peer reviewed publications.

In 2018, I achieved a Master’s degree in Medical Ethics and Law from Keele University with a particular interest in the ethical issues relating to end of life treatment in ICU. I have read the guidance “Acting as an expert or professional witness – Guidance for healthcare professionals”, which is endorsed by The Royal College of Anaesthetists and is consistent to the standards and guidance of General Medical Council and act in accordance with these guidelines.

In 2019 I became a founder member of the Legal and Ethical Advisory Board (LEAG) of the Intensive Care Society (ICS). This board advises the ICS on responding to legal and ethical issues arising from hearings in Coroner's courts and other legal judgements involving adult intensive care. Board members will be available to offer advice to courts on behalf of the ICS if requested to do so, and are responsible for educating members of the ICS and for writing guidelines on legal and ethical issues concerning ICU.
