Stephanie Thomas has been a Consultant Medical Microbiologist at Manchester University Foundation Trust (Wythenshawe Hospital) since 2010 and is the speciality Lead. She gained an honours degree in biochemistry with microbiology from St. Andrews University, Scotland and her medical degree from Dundee University.

She completed higher specialist training in medical microbiology in Manchester, UK. During this time she completed a Master’s degree in diagnostic and medical virology at the University of Manchester and a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. She holds a post graduate certificate in medical education and is the trust specialist training lead for microbiology.

Her main clinical roles include management of patients with sepsis and blood stream infections. She is lead microbiologist for the Severe Respiratory Failure Service, managing infection in patients on the intensive care unit and undergoing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

Her other interests include management of surgical site infection, particularly complex vascular infections and diabetic foot infection. Spanning all of this is her interest in the increasing threat and spread of antimicrobial resistance, particularly related to Carbapenem resistance in the gram-negative bacilli. In addition she is the departmental lead for decontamination and oversees the development of the trust decontamination policies.

She has successfully completed the CUBS Expert Witness certificate.
